Murfreesboro is home to Middle Tennessee State University, which is the second largest university in the state. Our local K-12 schools earned the Governor's A+ Award for Excellence in Education. Furthermore, the county's commitment to education is reflected through the Chamber of Commerce sponsored Business Education Partnership, which sponsors programs for the benefit of public/private school students.
The county has a roster of business and industry that makes a Who's Who; including companies like Nissan North America, Inc., Bridgestone/Firestone, State Farm Insurance, General Electric, Waldenbooks/Borders Books, Inc., Ingram and Pillsbury, to list only a few.
While the current Middle Tennessee Medical Center has served Murfreesboro from it’s downtown location for the last 75 years, a new $278 million hospital will begin construction mid-2008. The new hospital will be conveniently located on Medical Center Parkway with easy access to I-24. Additionally, the Alvin C. York VA Campus has over 1,400 employees to serve the medical needs of veterans.
For history buffs, Rutherford County is steeped in civil war history with the Stones River National Battlefield, Cannonsburg Village, Oaklands Historic House Museum, Sam Davis Home and others. Recreation abounds with SportsCom sports complex, golf courses, soccer, and baseball, along with boating and fishing on scenic Percy Priest Lake.
For the shopping enthusiast, Murfreesboro boasts two malls including big retailers JCPenny’s, Dillard’s, Sears, Belk, Best Buy, White House/Black Market, Ann Taylor Loft, Off Broadway, Chicos, Stein Mart, Marshall’s, Old Navy, T.J. Maxx, Pets Mart, PetCo, Kohl’s, Office Max, Home Depot, Lowes, Toys “R” Us, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Linens N Things, HH Gregg, and Ross Dress for Less to name a few!
